Bowls in Nova Scotia
Also called “bowls,” lawn bowling was brought to Canada by the British troops in the 18th century, and the sport grew in popularity throughout the next 100 years.
In April 1734, officers at the Garrison Grounds in Annapolis Royal petitioned to have a small area turned into a bowling green. Their request was granted, and a piece of the governor’s garden became the first bowling green in Canada.
History of Bowls at Wanderers
Bowls at the Wanderers Grounds started as a part of the Wanderers Amateur Athletic Club- which had a strong presence in the sporting community starting in the late 1800's. After building a green on the Wanderers Grounds, the Wanderers Lawn Bowls Club opened in 1887 and other then a short gap in play during World War One where the club had to give up our grounds to the Army- there has been bowls on the Wanderers Grounds almost consistently for the past 130+ years. Throughout our club's history, we've had a rich history of developing bowlers of all ages and abilities and helping them reach major success in the sport. Members have gone on to win provincial titles, national titles and represented Canada many times on the international stage.
We've also been very fortunate to have bowlers from all around the country make their way to our greens throughout the years for national competition as we've hosted the Canadian Lawn Bowling Championship, Canadian Senior Triples Championship and the Canadian Junior and Under-25 Championship throughout the years.
